Discover an extraordinary story of courage, family history, and unexpected homecoming in The Accidental Hero, a multimedia one-man show written and performed by Patrick Dewane. The production tells the true story of his grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel Matt Konop, a World War II American officer whose wartime journey led him to liberate the Czech villages of his own grandparents.
After his grandfather’s death, Dewane discovered a remarkable collection of typewritten accounts, photographs, and rare film footage in his basement. These long-hidden materials became the foundation for a deeply personal production that brings Konop’s experiences to life through historical archives, humor, and emotional storytelling.
Taking on a dozen different roles, Dewane recounts his grandfather’s journey from Omaha Beach through the Battle of the Bulge and the final days of World War II. As the story unfolds, a tale of survival becomes an extraordinary account of identity, connection, and belonging. Konop’s liberation of the Czech people leads to an unexpected homecoming of his own, creating a moving conclusion to this remarkable family history.
ARTCORE attendees can also enjoy a special bistro food and drink menu created for the event by CitiWerks Cafe, available for purchase.
