A public library can be a place to discover far more than books. Alongside reading materials, educational programs, and community resources, libraries are increasingly creating opportunities for people to explore technology, experiment with new tools, and develop practical skills. In Casper, the Natrona County Library is bringing that spirit of discovery to the world of digital design with an upcoming introduction to 3D scanning.
On Tuesday, October 20, the library will host a free 3D Scanning Intro & Demo at 6 p.m. in the Creation Station, its community makerspace. Open to all ages, the program will introduce participants to the library’s 3D scanner and demonstrate how physical objects can be captured and transformed into digital models. The session will be led by Scott, the library’s Technology and Makerspace Specialist.
Unlike 3D printing, which creates a physical object from a digital design, 3D scanning works in the opposite direction. The scanner captures information about an existing object’s shape and surface, allowing specialized software to reconstruct it as a three-dimensional model. Depending on the object, scanning conditions, and processing involved, the resulting model can be used for digital projects, design work, or preparation for 3D printing.
During the demonstration, participants will learn about the library’s Revopoint Miraco 3D scanner and the basic process of turning real-world objects into digital files. The technology provides a practical introduction to a process used in areas such as product design, prototyping, creative projects, and digital preservation. Rather than simply hearing about the technology, attendees will have an opportunity to see how it works and better understand its potential applications. READ MORE...
